For decades, commercial refrigerators relied on synthetic HFC refrigerants such as R404A and R134a. They work well, but they have a very high global warming potential (GWP) when they leak into the atmosphere. Regulations in Europe and many other markets are steadily restricting them.
What are R290 and R600?
R290 is propane and R600 is butane. Both are natural hydrocarbons with a GWP in the single digits, compared with well over a thousand for common HFCs. They also have excellent thermodynamic properties, so a well-designed system can reach the required temperatures efficiently.
Are they safe?
Hydrocarbons are flammable, so equipment is designed for it: the refrigerant charge is small and sealed in the factory, electrical components are selected and positioned accordingly, and international safety standards such as IEC 60335-2-89 set the limits for charge size and design. Plug-in cabinets are charged and sealed at the factory, so no refrigerant handling is needed in the store.
What it means for your store
- Lower environmental impact and easier compliance with refrigerant regulations
- Efficient operation, which helps keep energy bills under control
- Plug-in installation: connect to power and the cabinet is ready to work
The refrigerant used by each FROSTECH model is listed in its technical specifications, together with voltage and frequency.
